The Best Christmas ads of 2021
So, it’s fast approaching the time of year when all of our favourite brands drop their Christmas ads. It’s become somewhat of a thing now with many companies and brands jumping on the hype in a bid to create the best Christmas ad of the year which leaves a lasting impact on consumers. The time is nearly here where the 2022 Christmas ads will air, so we thought we would round up the best Christmas ads of 2021 before they do!
John Lewis - Unexpected Guest
In what looks like something out of ET, the 2021 Christmas Ad from John Lewis did not disappoint. It shows a young boy from Earth teaching and sharing the Christmas spirit and joy with a young alien called Skye. This comes after the alien’s spaceship crash landed in a forest on Earth near to the boy’s home who ends up frequently visiting the alien to engage in snowball fights, sharing mince pies and watching Christmas movies. With a piano cover of ‘Together in Electric Dreams’ by 20-year-old singer Lola Young playing in the background, it makes the perfect fitting for a heartfelt ad on Christmas.
Amazon – Kindness, the greatest gift
Amazon’s 2021 Christmas ad was all about celebrating kindness. The advert shows a woman noticing her younger neighbour struggling to deal with anxiety following the pandemic and recent events. As she notices her younger neighbour at the park feeding the birds, the two share a smile. Her neighbour then gifts the younger lady a bird feeder (from Amazon of course) which outlines how an act of kindness can bring both comfort and joy to others. This advert has a fitting sound track with a track released around the same time in 2021 from Adele titles ‘Hold On’.
Disney – The Stepdad
In a slightly longer ad, Disney really hit the heart strings with this one. Animated in the traditional Disney style, the ad depicts a new stepdad as he moves into his new partners home with two young children who then tries to find his place in the family at Christmas time. For more context, this ad follows on from last years advert which depicts a little girl called Nicole who bonded with her grandmother of various Christmas festivities and traditions. This little girl then grows up to be the mother depicted in the 2021 edition who now has two children of her own. Bravo to Disney on this one.
M&S - Christmas Food Hall
It what seems to be straight out of a cartoon movie, M&S sets the scene at the M&S Christmas Food Hall where the fairy at the top of the tree (voiced by Dawn French) casts a spell to awaken everyone’s favourite character and bring to life the Percy the Pig. Percy the Pig (voiced by actor Tom Holland) begins to run around the food hall with Dawn who continues to show him all the amazing food M&S has to offer including Christmas puddings, smoked salmon, Chocolate Panettone and much more in an interactive and humoured scene which fills you with joy.
Celebrations – Lonely Bounty
We have all been there at the end of Christmas day, no tasty celebrations left in the box apart from all those Bounties no one likes! If you have experienced this in the past, this advert is guaranteed to resonate and make you laugh. It features the lonely chocolate bar struggling to find a match (even when surfing internet dating sites and singles nights out). But in true celebrations fashion, the Love-actually styled spoof shows the Bounty finally finding his perfect match in another controversial food eaten at Christmas, the Brussel Sprout. I guess there really is someone for everyone.
As we eagerly await this year’s release of Christmas adverts, we wonder who will take centre stage this year and what creative and heart warming ideas will be thought of. Our personal favourite for the 2021 Christmas Ads would have to be Disney with a story which resonates with many families which is often not depicted in traditional Christmas adverts in an animated style we are all familiar with.
